you wanna be the ‘Queencard’?

Recently (G)I-DLE released their 6th mini album “I FEEL” conveying a message on self-esteem and confidence. The EP’s lead track, “Queencard,” specifically delves into highlighting these remarkable qualities. Come discover the meanings portrayed in the song!

What is ‘Queencard’?

The term queencard or ‘퀸카’ is actually a korean slang term used in the 2000s meaning a popular female student. Similarly, they would use the term “kingcard” for popular male students. Basically, the term expresses a girl/boy that is perceived to be popular, cool, and indirectly in the position “everyone wants to be in”.

What does the song tell?

1. Self-love and confidence

As said, The song emphasizes the importance of self-love and self-acceptance. This is particularly evident in the lyrics “Spotlight look at me, I’m a star star star, Queencard, I’m the top” that expresses the singer’s confidence in her own attractiveness and worth.

2. Acceptance of oneself

Just like how Soyeon, the leader of (G)-idle explained when composing the song, “the important thing is not the appearance”, but accepting oneself regardless”. Shortly, the ability to genuinely love oneself as they are is the key to becoming the ‘Queencard’.

3. Celebration of individuality

The song encourages individuality, as seen in the lines “Wearing whatever Girl, Queencard card card, Thin or thick Girl, Queencard card card, Full of confidence Girl, Queencard card card.” That is a form of affirmation that regardless of how one looks or what one wears, they can still be a ‘Queencard’

4. Empowerment

The song sends an empowering message not only to women, but also men on not fitting into the standards’. Instead, being themselves and loving themselves for who they are.
