Being trapped in a confined room is terrifying enough for a lot of people, even more so if that room is small, made of metal, and suspended by only a few strings of steel wire hanging 10+ meters off the ground. A malfunctioning elevator is arguably common, here are some tips of what you should do if you’re trapped in one!

  1. Stay calm

If the door does not open, you are still safe. Let’s say that five people got trapped in the elevator, it will begin to get warm if everyone is breathing heavily in a state of panic. Your best action is to remain calm, get comfortable, and wait for professional assistance. Just. Don’t. Panic!

  1. Press the alarm button

The alarm button will notify the building management people of the malfunction happening. So press it!

  1. Don’t play with the door

Don’t even try to exit the elevator even if the door was slightly open. If you try to pry the door open, it might make the elevator operable again in an abnormal manner, or worse, it might even fall. Whatever you do, don’t leave the elevator because being still inside the elevator is safest.

  1. Don’t jump up and down

When the elevator stops operating, some people may think jumping up and down will make the elevator operate again. But if we jump up and down, it will affect the machine’s stabilizer system and make it more difficult to be rescued.
