To stay alive, human needs oxygen to breathe, food to eat, and also water to drink. Most people usually fulfill the water requirement without any other calculation, while it’s okay to do so, it’s better to know how much water you should drink every day and know why you should drink enough water.

Why we need to drink enough water?

  • Gets rid of waste through urination, perspiration, and excretion process:
  • One of the body requirement to do these process is water.
  • Keeps your temperature normal:
  • Through sweating, water prevents overheating when the outside temperature is very high. Sweating is our main mechanism for thermoregulation: in fact, the evaporation of sweat entails a loss of calories in the form of heat
  • Lubricates and cushions joints
  • Protects sensitive tissues

What happens if we don’t drink enough water ?

Water is essential for the kidneys to function. If the kidneys do not function properly, waste products and excess fluid can build up inside the body. Untreated, chronic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, whereby the organs stop working, and either dialysis or kidney transplantation is required.

Dehydration – using and losing more water than the body takes in – can also lead to an imbalance in the body’s electrolytes. This can lead to seizures, involving involuntary muscle movements and loss of consciousness.

How much water do we need?

  • So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is:
  • About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men
  • About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women
