The main ingredient of the popular amplang is mackerel which is a typical fish that lives in the waters of the Mahakam river or the Karang Mumus river of Samarinda. Traditionally, amplang is made using the main ingredients of pipih fish or belida fish, but because these types of fish are becoming increasingly rare, the fish ingredient is changed to mackerel or cork fish.
Based on several sources, initially amplang comes from the city of Samarinda, East Kalimantan, and has been around since the 1970s. After being famous and popular in Samarinda, now this amplang production has spread to several areas in Kalimantan, namely Balikpapan, Banjarmasin, Pontianak, and even to neighboring countries, namely Malaysia.
