Indonesia celebrates National Children’s Day every July 23rd. National Children’s Day is different from International Children’s Day and World Children’s Day. The difference is in the date of the event and the scale of the people who celebrate it. There is a lot of history and complicated processes involved in this National Children’s Day. This event was decided during the reign of President Soeharto or we can also call it the New Order period.

The beginning of this National Children’s Day came from the Indonesian Women’s Congress. The idea came about during the school holidays in July 1952. The purpose of holding this event is to see children, as national assets, who are happy, playful, and cheerful. The date of this event has changed many times in early June and even changed to June 6th on Soekarno’s birthday.

During the reign of President Soeharto, many regulations from the Old Order were abolished and replaced with new regulations, as well as National Children’s Day. In 1984, National Children’s Day was held every July 23rd until now. The National Children’s Day activities are carried out from the central level to the regional level.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Child Empowerment and Protection, National Children’s Day is interpreted as the concern of the entire nation for the protection of Indonesian children so that they can grow and develop optimally. Until now, National Children’s Day is celebrated with various activities or events. In fact, the Indonesian Ministry of Child Empowerment and Protection has provided guidelines for organizing a national children’s day with full support from the government.

On its official website, the Indonesian Ministry of Child Empowerment and Protection said that people from the regional to provincial levels are free to hold activities. Examples of these activities are seminars, watching films together, social services, happy healthy walks, various types of competitions, and others. These activities are also supported by funds from the Anggaran Pendapatan dan Belanja Negara (APBN).

National Children’s Day is also used as a reminder for the Indonesian people to carry out the International World Fit for Children movement. This movement is realized with child-friendly cities in several cities in Indonesia. The ultimate goal of this movement, of course, is to realize a child-friendly Indonesia.
