There has been a lot of debate recently about the importance of pursuing higher education. Every day, we hear about the story of highly successful people such as Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. They managed to reach the top 10 wealthiest people globally without having a single degree. We also hear a lot of people living to pay their debt since college tuition is so high. With all of this in mind, many people started to question the value of going to college. In this article, we will be discussing why pursuing higher education could be something you would consider.

 1. In Indonesia, a college degree is still the standard in applying for a job

Right now, it is a fact that a lot of job vacancies still require the applicant to have at least a bachelor’s degree in their specific field. Even though this is not enough to get them through the application process, the fact shows that they will have a higher chance of acceptance. They will get even more advantage if their bachelor’s degree is linear with the job vacancy that they are applying for. So, if you do not have any degree in that specific field, you must have other great certifications to make you on par with those who have a degree.

2. Meet valuable people to connect with

Attending university allows you to meet people who have various backgrounds with unique interests. This opportunity will boost your probability of connecting with people in your potential career field. You will never know who will help you achieve your dream profession or connect you with the appropriate person who will.

3. College graduates earn higher on average

Based on the statistic given by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), workers with a bachelor’s degree earned an average of $30.000 more per year than high school graduates. In this 21st century, the economy has shifted from a manufacturing-based economy to a more knowledge-based economy, making education more critical in any industry these days. That is why most people who have intelligence get a higher salary than those who do laborious work. Regardless of what field you are willing to commit to, you will most likely benefit from going to college and having a degree.

4. Get well-rounded

Some say that the courses you took while you were in university will impact how you perform in your job. But, this is only relevant for some people since there is not a small number of people who work in a completely different field after they graduate. The one important thing you learn during university and will always be helpful in the future is your intrapersonal skills. Some examples of these skills are public speaking, critical thinking, leadership, and teamwork. These kinds of skills can easily be obtained through all the opportunities given in college. For example, you can learn teamwork when you have a group task, learn leadership when you become a leader in an organization, etc. These are the essential things that you can practice in college, so do not study too hard to achieve the best grades but push yourself to obtain those skills.

In conclusion, with the rapid change in this era, the global economy is becoming increasingly competitive. Most likely, going to college is a smart way to give yourself to compete with others. Imagine if 80% of people go to college and you don’t. You will immediately have a smaller percentage in winning over others in applying for a job. But, if you are still skeptical and have the luxury to go to college, let me tell you something. Gaining a whole ton of knowledge and experience in a field that you like is never a bad thing to do. You will be surprised at how much personal development you will experience too.
