Preventive Measures Against COVID-19 (Wuhan Coronavirus)

As the year goes by 2020, the world is being shadowed by a new outbreak. It is the Wuhan Coronavirus. But, so far the outbreak is already being contained in  Wuhan, China. The Chinese government is already doing good work for containing the newly-found disease. There are several minor – medium cases outside China like in America, Singapore, and Thailand. Usually, these cases are caused by tourists coming back from Wuhan and get infected.

Before we go into the preventive actions, it is good that we learn the virus chronological outbreak itself first. On 31 December 19, WHO (World Health Organization) was informed of a cluster of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. Thus, on February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease which is COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019).

There are many types of human coronaviruses like SARS-CoV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), MERS-CoV (the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus), or maybe a commonly caused mild-upper respiratory tract illnesses. But COVID-19 is a new disease, caused by a new coronavirus that has not previously been founded in humans. COVID-19 is related to SARS-CoV however it is not the same virus. The source host isn’t yet known but, health officials currently indicates that the virus originated by bats but not know whether the virus jumped directly from bats or there is an intermediary animal host like it’s counterpart SARS (bat origin then infect people through civets) and MERS (bat origin then infect people trough camel).

The COVID-19 symptom is ranged from mild symptoms to severe and even death. At the start, maybe it feels like normal fever but the fever can grow dangerously. Symptoms can include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The incubation period is 2 – 14 days based on the previous coronavirus strain the MERS-CoV.

Now for the preventive actions that we need to prevent the disease are:

Avoid contact with sick people

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth and face area

Stay home if you’re sick

Cough in tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash

Wear a facemask

Wash your hand

So, here are the preventive actions against the COVID-19. Remember to stay safe because we don’t know much about this new virus. Don’t panic just because WHO and international CDC declaring the virus as an outbreak or epidemic. We must stay alert and don’t be panic. It’s good that so far Indonesia isn’t infected yet. But, let us pray that will not happen. “We must stay alert but not anxious” – Doctor Mike.
