Javanese Language Class was held by BSSC Culture Division to help boarders learn a new local dialect. The class was also taught by competent teachers who have substantial knowledge about the language. Apart from learning a new language, boarders were able to learn Javanese culture and tradition that they have never heard about.
The Javanese Language Class was comprised of 6 meetings. Each was held on Thursday of every week. Throughout the program, students were able to learn a variety of unique Javanese culture and interact directly with Javanese teachers. The first class was held on March 14th, 2019 featuring a brief introduction about Javanese. Students were taught about how to pronounce numbers in Javanese and learned daily phrases that will be useful in the future. Apart from learning the Javanese language and culture, students also took part in several games. One of them is “Cuplak Cuplak Suweng”. Through this game, students were able to improve their social skills and make even more new friends. In addition, students were given a brief history about the royal palace in Yogyakarta called Keraton. This palace is one of the icon that defines Javanese Culture due to its unique philosophy and way of life.
We believe this class has been successful and also able to improve the students’ ability in learning the Javanese. Throughout the learning process, teachers and students were able to create a bond with each other and both sides were able to learn something new. Despite the challenges faced throughout the class, we look forward to holding another Javanese Language Class and improve on the mistakes that have been made previously.
