Sport Class “Martial Arts is About Building Character”
Sport Division as one of the divisions of BINUS Square Student Committee organization provides sport classes every year. BSSC Sports Class was provided to fulfill the desire of boarders BINUS Square to learn more about martial arts, yoga, or anything that challenges their bodies to do sports activities. This year, BSSC Sport held Aikido Class, one of martial arts from Japan. BSSC Sport collaborates with Aikido BINUS Student Organization. Aikido BINUS provided 2 trainers and mats.
Aikido is a martial art that emphasizes the principle of tenderness and how to love and guide the opponent. Therefore, Sport Class this time themed “Martial Arts is about Building Character”. Aikido Class is heldin four meetings at Gym BINUS Square. There are 16 participants who registered to join this Aikido Class. The class is held at 19:30 to 21:30 pm, and each meeting the participants learnedabout some basic exercises and basic techniques.
The first meeting was held on Friday, May 26, 2017. This meeting was attended by 11 participants while5 other participants were absent. On this first encounter, the participants learned basic techniques such as “hanmi” (stance), “tankan” (pivot), “kaiten” (one step pivot), “ikkyo undo” (reflex), and “funiko uni undo” (reflexes). They also learned few kinds of locked techniques such as “katate dori kokyu nage”, “kosa dori shiho nage”, “kosa dori nikkyo”, “kori dori irimi nage”, and “kori dori ikkyo”.
The second meeting was held on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. The meeting was attended by 7 participants while 8 other participants did not attend. On this second meeting, the participants reviewed basic techniques from the first meeting, learned about “ukemi” (forward roll), and break fall (in 3 ways). They also learned few kinds of locked techniques such as “katate dori nikkyo”, “kosa dori sankyo”, “kosa dori shiho nage”, and “kori dori kotegaishi”.
The third meeting was held on Friday, June 2, 2017. The meeting was attended by 10 participants while 6 other participants did not attend. The participants reviewed basic techniques from the second meeting and learned about “ushiro ukemi” (back roll). They also learned few kinds of locked techniques such as “katate dori nikkyo”, “kosa dori sankyo”, and “kori dori kokyu ho hijishime”.
The last meeting was held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017. This meeting was attended by 11 participants while 5 other participants were absent. The participants reviewed basic techniques of the previous meeting, learned about candles attitude, and practiced back roll. They also learned few kinds of techniques such as “tsuki kotegasihi”, “muna dori hijishime”, and “kosa dori koshi nage” (hip throw).On this last meeting the BSSC Sport gave certificates as an appreciation for the trainers and Aikido BINUS. The certificates was given by the project manager.
At each meeting participants were showing enthusiasm in learning Aikido. They really paid attention to the trainer in performing any given technique. They feel that four meetings was too short for learning Aikido. From this class they can learn about how to defend themselves, make new friends, and discipline.
