BINUS Debaters Shine at the 2024 Aurgumentum Open

The 2024 Aurgumentum Open, a prestigious English debate competition utilizing the British Parliamentary format, recently concluded with remarkable performances from debaters worldwide. Among the standout participants were three teams from BINUS University, demonstrating exceptional skill and determination throughout the event. Organized by Aurgumentum and founded by BINUS alumni Andree Chandra in 2019, this year’s competition took place online via Zoom from April 6 to April 7, 2024.

BINUS University proudly sent three teams of debaters and two institutional adjudicators to represent their institution. Leading the charge was BINUS Team C, composed of Rani Dahayu Cahyaningtyas and Calista Abigail Prayugo, who showcased their prowess in the novice category. Despite fierce competition, BINUS C distinguished themselves by breaking into the quarterfinals with an impressive 747 speaker points, a testament to their dedication and hard work.

In addition to the debaters’ success, BINUS’ institutional adjudicators also made waves at the competition. Nico Chainando and Regina Stephanie Wuisana demonstrated their expertise and earned commendable scores, with Regina’s outstanding performance—a testament to BINUS’ commitment to nurturing talent both in debating and adjudication. For our institutional adjudicator, Nico managed to obtain an average score of 6.2 and Regina obtained a remarkable average score of 7.3 and achieved breaking as institutional judge and eventually becoming the Novice Semi-Final adjudicator.

Despite facing challenging motions such as “This House supports the overemphasis of sexuality among privileged young women” and “This House would allocate current budget for space exploration to scientific research on Earth,” BINUS Team C showcased their analytical skills and eloquence, advancing to the semifinals as Closing Government. While their journey ended in the Novice Semifinal, their achievement as Novice Semifinalists underscores the promising future ahead for BINUS’s debating community.

Under the guidance of their exceptional coach, Muh. Batara Mulya, BINUS University’s debaters continue to strive for excellence, with their achievements limited only by their imagination. The university’s coaching program provides unwavering support, empowering students to overcome challenges and succeed on the global stage. As BINUS Debaters continue to shine, they inspire future generations to pursue their passion in debating and strive for greatness.
