HISTORY OF PANCASILA

Do you know the history of Pancasila way before it became our ideology? Let’s take a trip back to the past to commemorate this joyful day. Before the ideology of Pancasila, Indonesia was colonized by both the Netherlands and Japan. In the year 1944, Japan promised to offer Indonesia independence. Sukarno, Mohammad Hatta, and Radjiman Wedyodiningrat were overjoyed, and Japan organized an organization to prepare the upcoming independence for Indonesia. The members consisted of 60 Indonesian and 7 Japanese to supervise the activity. The organization was called BPUPKI. BPUPKI was announced on 1st March 1945 but was legalized on 29th April 1945. On 29th May 1945, the first meeting was held, and it was led by Mohammad Yamin. He delivered 5 principles which are nationality, humanity, deity, democracy, and people’s welfare. On 30th May 1945, the second meeting was held, and it was led by Soepomo. He delivered 5 principles as well which are unity, kinship, inner balance, deliberation, and people’s justice.

On June 1st, 1945, the third meeting was held, and it was led by Sukarno. He delivered 5 principles and we call them Pancasila, which consists of belief in the supreme God, civilized humanity, the national unity of Indonesia, democracy led by the wisdom of deliberations among representatives, and social justice for all Indonesian people. That is why 1st June 1945 was declared the Indonesian celebration for Pancasila Day.  Sukarno stated that this ideology is not his but belongs to the people of Indonesia. He also mentioned that Pancasila is a powerful basic, a basic that also encourages diverse people of Indonesia, a basic that unites all people of Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke with a purpose to start and end a revolution. So now that you know, let’s celebrate this wonderful day to remind us of the heroes that strived for our independence.
