Do you enjoy listening to music? What is your favorite genre of music? Everyone has their own preference of musical genre that they often listen to. For instance, according to the younger generations, Pop is the most popular genre because it’s enjoyable. But after listening to a certain music genre for a while, you sometimes feel that you are bored of that certain genre and you want to listen to another genre but do not know which one to listen to? Well, there are a lot of music genres that could be your new favourite genre, here are some recommendations for you.

1.     Alternative

Alternative genre is a more fractured and diversed version of the post-punk and new wave genres in the early 80s. The phrase ‘alternative music’ was invented to describe bands that changed their direction from the barrage of pop and hair metal to more focused and honest rock. Karma Police by Radiohead, Viva la Vida by Coldplay, and Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana are the popular alternative songs that you can listen to if you want a song genre that is unique and different.

2.     Blues

If you are interested in a deep and meaningful type of music, then blues is the right genre for you. In English terms, ‘blue’ means sad and depressed about something. That’s why this genre gives you an emotional and touching sensation whenever you listen to it. Some of the blues songs that you can listen to are The Thrill Is Gone by B.B. King and Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.

3.     Country

Country music is also known as Hillbilly music. It grew in the US around the 1920s and came as a hybrid of American folk music. This music is generally characterized by the use of guitar and heavily-accented vocals. Country music usually talks about life, cowboys, and a couple with a beautiful story. Famous song Love Story by Taylor Swift is one of the country songs, or you can also listen to Hurt by Johnny Cash and Jolene by Dolly Parton.

4.     Electronic

This genre emphasizes the use of electronic musical instruments, electronic music technology, and digital instruments as the central instrument. Those electronic instruments and equipment including electric piano, electric guitar, loudspeakers, and synthesizer. Some of the Electronic songs I would recommend you are Kids by MGMT, Teardrop by Massive Attack, and Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode.

5.     Jazz

Everyone must’ve known this genre. But sometimes this genre is misunderstood as blues, and vice versa. Some aspects of jazz music and blues music are the same, like both characterized by blue notes and call-and-response vocals. But these two genres are different in the swing style, and jazz is especially dominated by improvisation. That’s why jazz is known as “America’s original forms of art”. Black Coffee by Mary Juane Clair, What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, and Take Five by Dave Brubeck are the jazz songs recommendation for you.

6.     Latin

This genre encompasses rhythms and styles that originated from Latin America and it influenced other European countries such as Spain and Portugal. Latin genre generates music styles from Latin countries’ cultures, like salsa, merengue, and tango. It also generates styles from other music genres such as rock, jazz, and reggae. Most Latin music uses Spanish and Portuguese languages. You can try listening to Chan Chan by Buena Vista Social Club, La Camisa Negra by Juanes, and Whenever, Wherever by Shakira if you are interested in Latin music.

7.     Classical

Maybe all of you, at least once, have listened to classical music in your life. Most cartoon films, such as Tom & Jerry, used a lot of classical music in the background. Classical music is a piece of instrumental music, characterized by its complexity of harmony, development, rhythm, texture, and orchestration. The most popular classical music composers are Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Wolfgang Mozart. Songs that you can try to listen to are Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven, Air by Bach, and Requiem by Mozart.

There are still a lot of musical genres that aren’t listed here. But those musical genres above might be a great start for you if you are currently searching for a new music genre to listen to, or even for those of you who wanted to expand your knowledge about the music genre. So, do not hesitate to try and listen to those genres!
