The 2019 BNEC Social Event “Change For THE EARTH”

Even in the deepest pit on Earth, there lies a white plastic bag. Plastic pollution is now everywhere on the planet that cities, countries, and even states have banned single-use plastic bags. Overall, if the consumption of these fossil fuel-made plastic continues the plastics industry would account for a whopping 15 % of the total amount of carbon society can expel into the atmosphere. In a world where cars, planes, ships, electrical generation, and belching cows all contribute sizable carbon emissions, 15 % from plastics is an oversized contributor.

Therefore, this year’s social event theme is “Change for The Earth” that focused on the movement to stop, reuse or entirely replace single-use plastic with reusable things as well as preventing climate change by planting mangrove trees. The 2019 BNEC Social Event is an event participated by the youth across Indonesia. There will be 3 series of events: Mangrove Planting, Workshop & Comparative Study, and Talk show & Closing Ceremony. Along with the closing ceremony, we have broken the MURI Record for distributing 3000 bamboo straws for free in our venue.

Day 1: Workshop and Comparative study

The 2019 BNEC Social Event held a comparative study and discussion forum between Kehati, Jakarta Osoji Club, WWF, KOPHI and Trash Hero that act towards resolving these issues. The theme for this year’s comparative study is Plastic Bags Overconsumption and How to Stop Them.
The 2019 BNEC Social Event also held a workshop, Transform Your Used Clothes into Tote bags, with the help of Kertabumi Foundation. Our participants were taught how to transform unused things into a thing with entirely new purpose, especially used clothes into tote bags.

Day 2: Mangrove Planting

In order to take concrete steps to prevent abrasion, which is one of the effects of climate change, we have partnered up with KeMANGTEER, an organization that hold mangrove planting events frequently across Jakarta. KeMANGTEER gave us knowledge about mangrove trees and climate change. This time, BNEC and KeMANGTEER held a 200 mangrove trees planting event at Ecowisata PIK.

Day 3: Talk show & Closing Ceremony

Consumerism, which means consumption of goods at a high rate, has created mountains of waste. One of the most harmful waste being produced excessively is plastic. We learned a lot about over-consumerism from Ecorasa and Trash Hero on the talk show session. Also, in our closing ceremony there were performance by Serlika, Albert, Stamanara and Wushu Binus. At the same time, we distributed 3000 bamboo straws to the visitors of Plaza Atrium.
This activity was attended by MURI who documented and crowned this activity as the most bamboo straws distributed to public (3015 bamboo straws).

This social event not only affects the future of our earth, we also hope that the participants can truly be aware and spread awareness everywhere they go.
