Things To Know About Public Speaking

Public speaking, according to the Merriam-Webster, is an act or process of making
speeches in public, or the art of effective oral communication with an audience. Public
speaking is one of the medias we use to communicate with others.

Three keys for Public Speaking are Knowledge, Ethics and Skills. For Knowledge,
it will fill in the content of your public speech as it will deliver information for audience.
Content is important as it will grab the interest of the audience. Try to adapt in the
average length when you deliver these messages, as it will impact the audience’s
attention span. Make it too short, people will think it was not worth their while. Make it
too long and they’ll feel lost.

Content also needs to be original. It needs a combination of facts, ideas, and
opinions of what the audience haven’t heard before so it will be authentic and interesting.
The messages need to be relevant. Adapt the messages from the audience you’re facing
with. The message needs to be valuable and should reflect the speaker’s expertise and
proficiency. Dropping some quotes from what you thought to deliver the message would
be stimulating for the audience.

There are ethics in doing public speaking as well. There are set of values that are
manifested and desired in public speaking and those sets of values are credibility, honesty
and integrity. The message needs to be credible. If false content were shared intentionally
or unintentionally, it could damage your reputation as a public speaker. The messages
need to be honest. You have to share the facts and data honestly and accurately, so you as
a speaker could match the goals of your audience. The only ideas you have as a speaker
are the ones that you create. Messages need to have integrity as well, a total trust between
speakers and audience is when the speaker devoted their time and effort for preparing
their speeches, both in research and background reading.

Last but not least, skills. For skills, we could practice to be better and to master
public speaking, but it needs time and its not instant. Rehearse back before you go to
stage. To add a little boost for further performance, have a little confidence in yourself.
With confidence, audience will appreciate your messages and your effort to speak.
