In the heart of Indonesia’s competitive debating circuit, the Indonesian Varsities English Debate (IVED) stands as one of the most prestigious battlegrounds for young debaters. Held on the 16-17th and 23-24th of March, this year’s IVED saw the rise of fresh talent, particularly within the ranks of the Binus debate team. Known as one of the country’s classic debate tournaments alongside Nusantara Overland Varsities English Debate ( (NOVED) and Asian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) Universitas Indonesia, IVED 2024 promised exhilarating clashes of wit and rhetoric.
Binus Debate Team, fresh off their victory in the open category last year, entered the arena with a lineup of new faces. With seasoned debaters passing the torch to a new generation, the weight of expectation shifted onto these young shoulders. Led by Binus A comprising Regina Stephanie Wuisana, Rachel Chen, and Jennifer Marcellyn Cen in the open category, and Binus B featuring Christ Santus Burhan, Anindya Utami Nitipadma, and Carrissa Gloria Herman in the novice category, the team embarked on their quest for glory. With the guidance from one of BINUS’s world-class debaters, Batara Mulya, as their coach, the team embarked on the journey to continue last year’s success.

The preliminary rounds were a test of resilience and skill, with each debate pushing the Binus teams to their limits. Despite the challenges, Binus A clinched a spot in the top 8 of the open category, while Binus B secured an impressive position in the top 3 of the novice category. The journey wasn’t without its setbacks, as Binus A’s run came to an end in the Round of 16. However, Binus B powered through to the novice grand final, facing off against a formidable team from Universitas Indonesia.
In a thrilling showdown of intellect and persuasion, Binus B emerged victorious, claiming the novice grand final with a well-deserved ballot win. Anindya Utami Nitipadma’s stellar performance earned her the title of Novice Grand Final Best Speaker, showcasing the depth of talent within the Binus debate ranks. With a lineup predominantly comprised of freshmen, this triumph speaks volumes about Binus’s commitment to nurturing and developing young debaters.
