GET TO KNOW FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD
Festival is a Latin word and has the root word “festa” which means party. This means a festival is a big party or festive event held to commemorate something. Festivals are usually held in many countries, where each country has its own festival and is usually a characteristic of the country. This festival is held so that people can commemorate and appreciate something that is usually celebrated there.
Many countries are still doing this festival from the past until now. This means that every country still respects the customs or festivals that have existed since time immemorial. Therefore, here are some of the festivals that exist in the world and are still celebrated today.
- Holi Festival, India
This festival is a festival that originated in India. This festival is very interesting because there will be many colors mixed into one. This festival is a festival where people will throw colors and unite them regardless of differences, because the meaning of this festival is unity.
- Wakakusa Yamayaki Matsuri Festival, Japan
The Wakakusa Yamayaki Matsuri festival which means “The Mountain Roast” is celebrated on the 4th Saturday in January every year. This festival is held to burn dead grass on the slopes of Mount Wakakusayama. Then at the end after the burning there will be fireworks which are very interesting to see. It is said that the meaning of this festival was carried out because there was a territorial dispute between the two nearby temples, namely Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji temples. However, the meaning of this festival now is only to exterminate pests and repel wild boars.
- Lantern Festival, Taiwan
This lantern festival dates back to the Xing Dynasty, which means this festival is more than two thousand years old. The festival stems from the story of an evil mob that attacks villages in the lowlands, forcing people to seek refuge. So, the people seek shelter in the mountains, then the village guards will fly lanterns to signal to the residents that their homes are safe and they can return to their homes. Today, the festival has two meanings, the first is to write wishes to the buyer of the lanterns, and to represent the end of the Chinese New Year period.
- Oktoberfest, German
This festival is a festival for beer lovers. If you really like beer then you can celebrate this festival in Germany. Originally this festival was held to commemorate the wedding celebration of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. This festival is held for 16 days. During the celebration of this festival, you can drink as much beer as you like, but fear not for those of you who don’t like beer. You can sit in the tent and enjoy other dishes.
- Lake Toba Festival, Indonesia
This festival is held every year in September on Lake Toba. This festival is held to unite all components of the Sumatran community to participate in equalizing the welfare of the community in the form of tourism and the economy. This festival usually provides a lot of cultural music, arts, and traditional sports competitions. If you visit this festival, then you must visit the very famous ulos exhibition there.
There are so many festivals in this world that are very interesting and we should appreciate them more. So, which festival would you like to visit and enjoy?
