Disco Elysium: A Modern Classic

Disco Elysium, you may have or have not heard about it. Essentially, it is a video game. However, it is not “just” a video game. I would say that it is an experience. You might be wondering, how come? Well, allow me to explain it to you bit by bit. Published by ZA/UM, Disco Elysium is a role-playing game (RPG) released in 2019. Although it is an RPG, it is a non-traditional one with twists of its own. The game does not have combat per se, but actions and/or events are done through dialogues and a skill check system that features 24 skills picked to your liking. I do not want to spoil too much of the gameplay, so let us move on to the game’s main selling point, the story, and the world. 

The game takes place in an alternate world with rich history and culture. Here you play as a detective, an amnesiac one, who just woke up from a hangover in a room with no memory of his own identity whatsoever. On the way outside, you will meet your partner, Kim Kitsuragi, who will accompany you throughout the game. One of the first pieces of information you will receive from Kim is that the two of you are here to investigate and solve a murder case filled with mysteries. As you play through the game, you will make decisions that will affect the story. Every action you make has its consequences. You can try to approach and solve this case the way you want. You can be a corrupt detective, a good detective, someone who can manipulate others, and so much more to choose from. You will also be able to learn more about the world around you and even adopt political ideas into your character’s thought process. There are so many things you can do in this game for you to solve this case.

So, that was brief information about the game and what to expect. I highly recommend that you try it yourself. To some, it might not be their kind of game, but if you are interested in this sort of game, I assure you, you will not regret playing it.
