SOCIAL EVENT ALAM SUTERA 2022: COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE

This year, Bina Nusantara English Club Alam Sutera proudly presents one of the big events they hold annually: a social event with a theme of combating climate change. This event was held with four series of activities: webinar, online campaign, workshop, and donation. What makes this year’s event special from previously is that we got a chance to conduct this activity hybrid (online and onsite) after a lockdown due to coronavirus.

We chose “Combating Climate Change” as a theme because the Earth is undergoing a crisis on environmental changes, and climate change is considered the third most serious issue facing the world by the world’s population. Indonesia holds the highest percentage of climate change deniers among 23 countries. Eighteen percent of Indonesians do not believe climate changes are due to human activities, whereas 6 percent believe that the climate is not changing. Ironically, society still thinks climate change is considered a hoax or conspiracy theory and neglects the long-term effects of not protecting the environment. Thus, environmental issues might be a heavy topic that might be hard to reach out to. Therefore, this social event aims to educate about the urgency and importance of our environment, especially climate change.

Webinar

Our webinar was held on August 24, 2022, and was open to the public to introduce and educate participants about environmental issues related to climate change and provide important information to support virtual campaigns. This activity is a collaboration with Zero Waste as the webinar’s speaker.

Online Campaign

Our online campaign was held for seven days, from August 24 to 30, 2022. The purpose of this activity is to encourage the participants to do small acts that will contribute to combating climate change. These actions were structured with the hope that the participants could give small impacts and change the Earth. That’s why we called them “Mini Earth Hero”.

Workshop

Our workshop was held onsite on August 25, 2022, in Tarsisius Vireta Middle School. The concept of our workshop is about 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) to educate the students in Tarsisius Vireta Middle School on how to recycle trash they see every day and learn how to turn trash into items that have usability value. Hence, we collaborated with Bank Sampah Tri Alam Lestari to teach the participants how to create a keychain and pencil holder. To support this activity, we also had volunteers from BINUS students that participated directly to guide the participants during the workshop session.

Donation

To support our activity to educate the urgency and importance of climate change, we opened a donation from August 17 to 31, 2022, for the public to raise a fund to create 75 booklets about climate change that would be donated to Tarsisius Vireta Middle School Library. The handover of the donated books to the Tarsisius Vireta Middle School was carried out after the workshop session and was enlivened with teaching activities and discussions about climate change. Other than that, we also donated an education video of 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) to the UMKM training institution, whose goal is to empower UMKM and educational institutions to make 3R learning videos as learning modules in schools.

So, what do you think of our social event theme this year? Fascinating, right? Because we can have an impact on our society through education by encouraging small action with an online campaign, raising awareness about the issue with a webinar, and spreading the knowledge of climate change using Tarsisius Vireta and social media as the platform. Thank you for participating in our combating climate change activities and becoming a mini Earth hero. We hope to see you guys at our next event!
