The Increasing of Mental Health Issues On Young People

Why do mental health issues affect more younger people than older people?

What exactly is mental health? According to WHO(World Health Organization), “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.

It’s important for us, to understand that every one of us have mental health, and we have responsibility to manage it. By managing our mental health, we all can have a meaningful and satisfying life. It’s also important to understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. So when we are feeling down, or ill, we also need to manage it or even cure it. But, as years go by, i found that many young people suffers from mental health problems. I start to wonder, why younger people are more prone to mental health illnesses?

I feel like more younger people don’t share their problem with another human being, or people in their real life. They prefer to rant about things or about their feelings through social media. Lack of interaction in real life can contribute to the development of mental health issues because they will feel lonely or isolated from real life. Feeling lonely for a long time can cause sadness. It is fine for us to feel sad, angry or any negative feelings. But, if we can’t turn that negative feelings to positive feelings, it will burden us and eventually we will develop some kind of problems with our mental health.

It is best for us to seek help for our mental health problems early, because it will be easier to cure it. But, as we can see, not many people especially younger people seek help because factors like stigma, lack of understanding, uncertainty, and fear. From these factors, many younger people don’t want to seek help mostly because of the stigma. They are afraid that people will see them as a “problematic” people. That’s why they prefer to keep it all to themselves or just rant about it on their social media.

We must understand that seeking early help for mental health problems are so important for their life. Chronic mental health problems are often really hard to be cured. They even can be suicidal and lost their hope to live. This can affect their daily lives or even their daily activities. That’s why we need to be more aware of our surroundings and also we need to be more compassionate to one another. Have more real interaction rather than online chatting.
