The Power of Gravity: How the Panama Canal Lifts Ships Without Pumps

The Panama Canal is not just an 82 kilometer long waterway. Panama Canal is real proof that humans can “change” the world map. Imagine, before this canal opened in 1914, ships wanting to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific had to go around the southern tip of South America via Cape Horn. That route was up to 20,000 kilometers long, took weeks, and put lives at risk because of the notoriously fierce Antarctic storms. Once the Panama Canal was built, this shortcut completely changed the history of world trade.

The greatness of the Panama Canal actually comes from a really radical change in thinking. The United States took over this project in the early 20th century, they used a much smarter approach they chose to work with nature.  Instead of exhausting themselves digging the mountains down to the sea level, they opted to dam the Chagres River to create an artificial lake.

Technically, Panama canal works using physics laws that we often learn in school, the Principle of Communicating Vessels and Archimedes’ Law (buoyant force). Its lock system works kind of like an elevator or a water staircase. When a ship enters the lower chamber, the door is closed, then the water valve is opened. Water from Lake Gatun, which is at a higher level, naturally flows down due to gravity. As the water volume in the chamber rises, the ship automatically gets lifted up thanks to Archimedes’ buoyant force. The cool part is, the whole process of moving millions of cubic meters of water uses 100% pure gravity, meaning zero electricity is needed for pumps.

This locking wall is built solid using a massive concrete structure that’s really thick, with no steel reinforcement inside, relying purely on the weight of the concrete itself to hold back the pressure from water and surrounding soil. In fact, the design of the water gate, called the Miter Lock, was adapted from a sketch by Leonardo da Vinci 500 years ago. The gate is designed so that the more it’s pressed, the tighter and more watertight it becomes automatically.

The impact of this canal is insanely huge for our civilization. The logistics costs for goods all over the world instantly drop drastically, and the global economy moves way faster.
