As global temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more intense, and longer-lasting. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), extreme heat is one of the leading weather-related causes of illness and death worldwide. This makes understanding the dangers of extreme heat more important than ever.
So, what exactly is a heatwave?
A heatwave is a prolonged period of unusually high temperatures that lasts for several consecutive days, often exceeding the average temperature of a region. Unlike ordinary hot weather, a heatwave places excessive stress on the body’s natural cooling system. Although the body regulates temperature through sweating, prolonged exposure to extreme heat reduces its effectiveness, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and other heat-related illnesses. As climate change intensifies, heatwaves have become a growing global health concern.
Why are heatwaves becoming more frequent?

How does extreme heat affect our health?
Extreme heat can seriously affect human health, especially when high temperatures persist for several days. One of the most common risks is dehydration, which occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. Prolonged heat exposure can also lead to heat exhaustion, causing heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headaches. In severe cases, heatstroke may occur, resulting in a dangerously high body temperature and damage to vital organs. In addition, extreme heat can worsen chronic conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and kidney diseases. According to the WHO and the Lancet Countdown, rising temperatures continue to increase heat-related health risks worldwide.
How can we protect ourselves during heatwaves?
Although heatwaves can be dangerous, many health risks can be prevented through simple daily habits. People should avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day and stay in cool or shaded places whenever possible. Drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, and taking cool showers help maintain hydration and regulate body temperature. Homes should also be kept cool by closing curtains during the day and opening windows at night when the air is cooler. Older adults, young children, people with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers require extra attention because they are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. By staying informed and preparing in advance, individuals and communities can reduce the risks associated with extreme heat (World Health Organization, 2026).

By understanding the hidden health risks of extreme heat and taking preventive action, we can better protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities from future heatwaves.
