Coffee Culture Among Students: Productivity Booster or Health Risk?

Most college students can’t get through a day without caffeine. Coffee is part of the daily grind, whether it’s cramming for an assignment, pulling an all-nighter, or staying awake in an early class. Group projects end up at a coffee shop, and coffee has become part of everyday social life, not just taste and energy.

But does coffee actually make you sharper or better at school? Turns out, it’s not that simple. Studies on caffeine and academic performance have found its real effect on grades is smaller than assumed, and some even show heavier drinkers don’t do better, and sometimes do worse.

The effects don’t stop at grades. Higher caffeine intake has been linked to more anxiety and worse sleep quality. Ironically, the habit meant to keep you awake during the day can ruin your sleep at night, creating a loop: coffee to stay awake, poor sleep, then more coffee just to function. At this point, coffee is a coping mechanism for college pressures, with consequences most don’t think about.

A research by Easterling and colleagues, reviewing studies on caffeine and student performance, found caffeine’s overall effect on GPA was small and inconsistent, with some studies even showing a negative relationship once heavy-use outliers were accounted for (Easterling et al., 2018). This lines up with research from the University of the Balearic Islands, where nearly 900 undergraduates were surveyed and higher intake was linked to poorer self-reported sleep quality rather than better academic outcomes (Riera-Sampol et al., 2022). A third cup’s boost may simply mask fatigue, not enhance performance.

Health risks extend beyond mental strain into the body. Regular high intake is linked to increased heart rate, digestive discomfort, and heightened anxiety, and because caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, the body builds tolerance and needs larger doses to feel normal (Rocha Cabrero & Hamilton, 2025). Cutting back often brings withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and irritability, which can hurt focus more than the tiredness students were trying to fix (Rocha Cabrero & Hamilton, 2025). Caffeine stops being a tool and becomes a substance students depend on just to function.

This pattern grows more concerning when linked to compulsive study habits, common among high achievers. A study of over 3,800 university students found caffeine partially mediated the link between compulsive overstudying and perceived stress: students who studied excessively drank more caffeine, which then heightened their stress rather than easing it (Kosecka et al., 2025). In the larger sample, caffeine also linked compulsive studying to higher anxiety and depression scores (Kosecka et al., 2025). For students prone to overworking, caffeine may deepen the grind’s psychological toll, reinforcing the very stress it was meant to relieve.

Coffee culture is also tied to how students socialize and cope. Caffeine intake has been linked not only to academic pressure but to broader stress management, where students reach for another cup instead of addressing real causes of fatigue, like poor time management or too little sleep (Riera-Sampol et al., 2022). Coffee shops are the default meeting spot for group work or catching up with friends, so cutting back on caffeine can feel like cutting back on social life, which is why it’s hard to separate coffee from student identity.

Coffee itself isn’t the villain, it’s the role it’s been forced into. When caffeine substitutes for real rest or time management, the cup becomes a patch over an unsolved problem, feeding the same cycle described above.

The fix isn’t quitting coffee, it’s addressing what it’s covering for. A pilot combining sleep education with wearable trackers for first-year students significantly improved sleep quality and lowered psychological worry within four weeks (Bani Issa et al., 2023). A single two-hour time management session for freshmen also prevented the usual semester-start stress spike an untrained control group still experienced (Häfner et al., 2014). Neither targets caffeine directly, and that’s the point, both target why students feel they need it.

Short sleep-literacy or time management sessions built into orientation could do more than any anti-coffee campaign. Coffee culture isn’t going anywhere, but with better tools for sleep and time, that cup can go back to being a choice, not a crutch.
