The Differences Between Modern Music and Classical Music

These days there’s not a lot of people who listen to classical music such as Mozart, they prefer something more modern such as pop or jazz, such as maroon 5. Not a lot of people know the key differences between modern music and classical music, so that’s why I wrote this article. I’m going to tell you guys they key differences what sets the apart such as instrumentation, form, style, purpose and method of creation.

In many keyways, classical music and modern music are distinct. The most obvious way is through their respective periods of time. Typically, classical music is considered music made before the 19th century, whereas after the 19th century, modern music is born. In other respects, both music types are vastly different, including instrumentation, form, design, intent, and production process.

Instrumentation
Ddickerson.igc.org notes that groups of acoustic instruments usually perform classical music. They include violin, viola, cello, flute, upright bass, piccolo, French horn, tuba, trombone, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and saxophone. While all these instruments appear in large orchestras, only some of them are used by smaller classical groups called chamber ensembles. String quartets, brass quintets and woodwind quintets are traditional chamber ensembles. Modern music uses instruments like electric guitar, electric bass, and keyboard.

Form
Classical music consists primarily of various sections of instrumental compositions. According to Library. Thinkquest.org, a symphony is a typical example of classical composition, and includes four movements. Concerto, rondo, mass, oratorio and sonata are other types of classical music. Such types can vary from minutes to hours anywhere. Using much smaller forms than classical music, modern music usually lasts a few minutes. There are also fewer types of modern music, with the songs in different orders consisting of a collection of verses and choirs.

Style
Scaruffi.com notes that there are many more complexities to classical music than to modern music. In classical music, emphasis is placed on the performers placed in a written piece of music by emotion and interpretation. Classical music is also considered to have a wide range of rhythms and will often accelerate and slow at various movements. Although modern music often communicates emotion through a group’s singer, more emphasis is placed on improvisation and variety than on classical music.

Purpose
Classical.net offers a different distinction between classical and modern music. The aim of classical music is generally to entertain a seated audience and emotionally and intellectually stimulate listeners. While some modern music is being created to activate in similar ways, it also diverges greatly from classical music. A lot of modern music is composed just for dancing, which is rare outside of the ballet for classical music. Interestingly, while both classical and modern music has been used extensively, modern music appears much more frequently in jingles and commercials than in classical music.

Method of Creation
The composition of each type of music is very different. It is not unusual for composers to take years, even decades, to complete a piece, given the long forms of classical music. Classical music is often created by introducing many slowly developed themes and motifs throughout a piece. Modern music, on the other hand, also uses much less motives and ideas. Often, as modern music is often based on a performer, this is the first instrument a writer begins to compose for. In classical music, writing on a piano is more common for a composer, imagining all of the orchestra’s instruments playing various parts.
