PKM HIMSI 2026: The Magic of Storytelling

Kepada Masyarakat, or shortened for PKM, is one of HIMSI’s work programs where volunteer students go to either schools or orphanages to teach children along with their assigned lecturers that they would accompany throughout the entire session. But this year’s PKM is a bit different. As the activity was done through zoom and the participants were the combination of different schools. Specifically, high schools. The activity was held from the 4th of August till the 13th of October. The material for this year’s PKM is about storytelling and how students can build up their own world in many different ways.

For each day, the material for storytelling is split into different topics per day so that the students are able to know the baseline for storytelling from the very simple start. Now, what are those topics that we have discussed each day? Here are the 10 topics:

  • Day one: What is a Story?
  • Day two: Story ideas Everywhere
  • Day three: Building a character
  • Day four: The Beginning, Middle, and End
  • Day five: Creating Problems and Solutions
  • Day six: Writing Great Dialogue
  • Day seven: Making Stories More Exciting
  • Day eight: Storytelling with images and Videos
  • Day nine: Sharing Your Stories
  • Day ten: Creating a Story World

With each topic for each day, the lecturers assigned are different. And each one presents their own unique way of presenting the topics. While also giving the participants fun activities to do while experimenting how creative each student can be when starting out storytelling.

Despite the session being only an hour long, the lessons given encourage students to explore storytelling and experiment their footing when it comes to how they want to create a world and compelling characters. With the materials given, we hoped it will give students the necessary tools for them to pursue storytelling.
