2022 BiFest; HIMSI Webinar
Source: BiFest
BiFest is yet here again! Just as last year, this year BINUS is welcoming the BINUS Festival or other known as BiFest. BiFest is a student program which is held regularly twice a year. This event is a collaboration between the Student Club and Activity Center (SCAC) and 30 Student Organizations, including all the organizations from Himpunan Mahasiswa Jurusan (HMJ) and Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa (UKM). Such as BINUS Entrepreneurship Center, Global Business Marketing, Chinese Literature, English Literature and many other more. This year, HIMSI got the chance to appear on one of the scheduled BiFest’s Student Organizations Webinars. HIMSI’s webinar, titled “Writing Research Paper in English for College Students” was conducted on 20 May 2022 at 16.00 p.m., which lasted for two hours until 18.00 p.m.
The webinar started exactly at 16.10 p.m. with a small opening speech by the MC, Annisa Rifani, who lifted up the atmosphere with her excitement towards the webinar for the later two hours. Then she proceeded to introduce us to the webinar’s speaker, Ms. Paramita Ayuningtyas and Ms. Listya Ayu Saraswati. Ms. Paramita and Ms. Listya proceeded to say hello as they were being introduced by Annisa. Then she introduced the webinar’s Moderator, Aytkua Sarrah Andaya who was going to later on assist the lecturers in the Q&A session after each speaking session done by the speakers.
The first speaker for the webinar was Ms. Paramita who presented the topic “Common Mistakes in Writing Research Paper”. Ms. Paramita pointed out and explained into detail, a total of eight common mistakes that people make in writing research papers; Not following the instructions, topic and objectives are not clear, where is the thesis statement, methodology is not stated, data are not presented in an organized way, using too casual language, too old and invalid references, and last but not the least important, not editing the paper before submitting it. Ms. Paramita delivered the point well for us to understand easily. After the presentation, Annisa proceeded Aytkua, the moderator, to lead the Q&A session for Ms. Paramita’s presentation. There were quite a number of questions that came from participants which then Aytkua read and granted Ms. Paramita to answer. The questions were some very broad and some narrow, nonetheless, Ms. Paramita proceeded to answer them which left those who questioned satisfied.
Our second speaker, Ms. Listya, was introduced again and was given the time to present her topic, by Annisa. Ms. Listya’s topic, “Writing Strong Thesis Statement” included a variety of how to write and make out a good thesis which would help students in their research paper. She elaborated the importance of a thesis statement and what its definition is. She also elaborated on quite a number of important points that could help students in making a good thesis statement. They include what is not a good thesis statement, when do students need a thesis statement, how to get the ideas for thesis the statement, what should a thesis statement include and many other points that should be kept in mind to have a good thesis statement. Right after Ms. Listya’s presentation, just as was done after Ms. Paramita’s presentation, Aytkua held a Q&A session for Ms. Listya where participants also enjoyed asking questions, while Ms. Listya answered them happily. After the Q&A session, there was a break time for the participants and the speakers to write a short essay for the speakers to later on be the judge and to review their writings. There was a link given to them which led to a padlet. There, quite a few students wrote an essay which was later to be reviewed by the speakers. The break lasted for half an hour with a couple of songs accompanying everyone.
The break and ended, and so was the time to write the essay. Annisa then guided the two speakers to review the padlet. Ms. Listya and Ms. Paramita were surprised because some of the essay written, were quite well made. They also had a great thesis statement. After the reviewing session, the webinar was ended with some closing speech by both the speakers. They wished the topics would be helpful to all students who are planning to write a research paper. Annisa then told the participants to turn on the camera as it was time to take a photo together. Many participated in the photo. The event ended with a warm and light note. This was the first participation of HIMSI in BINUS Festival, and greatly, it ended successfully with many participants from different courses joining. HIMSI hopes that this webinar would bring a great start for others outside of HIMSI to know more about English and what it studies. Thank you to all the BiFest committe who have prepared this amazing webinar. See you all in the next BiFest!
