PKM HIMSI 2025: The Four Seasons Against Climate Change

PKM or Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat is one of HIMSI’s most anticipated annual programs. This event was held over five days, on 17, 18, 21, 22, and 23 July 2025, and took place at SMP Al-Hasanah, West Jakarta. The theme for this year’s PKM was ‘The Four Seasons Against Climate Change’ to raise awareness about climate change among middle schoolers. The primary goal of this event is to teach the students English through the movie “The Lorax”, movie analysis, script or poem writing, and teaching self-confidence to perform.

It was a bright first day, all the volunteers and committees arrived in SMP Al-Hasanah, introduced ourselves and the main theme of our event to the eighth-grade students. Ibu Dian Rahmawati AR, as SMP Al-Hasanah’s Vice Principal, gave an opening speech to start the event. Then the students were divided into 6 groups, with each group consisting of 3 volunteers who accompanied and taught the students. We played a mini ice-breaking session, followed by the movie “The Lorax” being watched together to further explain the main theme to the students. We ended the first day by asking a few students what they thought of the movie.

On the second day, we started the learning session. Our volunteers explained to the students in their group with a presentation titled “Movie Analysis: Important Elements of Fiction”, which explained the definition of fiction and the intrinsic elements of fiction. Then the students, with the help of the volunteers, analyze the movie ‘The Lorax’ based on the movie we watched yesterday and the materials that they had learned earlier that day. We ended the second day by asking a few students about the results of the “The Lorax” analysis they had learned.

On the third day, we learned a new presentation material titled “Script & Poem Writing,” which explained the intrinsic elements and guides to make poems and scripts, and then we gave the students options on what to perform on the final day between either a drama or a poem. Then, after we shared the materials, we asked the students what they had learnt.

On the fourth day, the volunteers focused more on training the students for the performance on day 5; some groups were still trying to refine the poems and scripts, while some other groups rehearsed the drama by properly fixing their pronunciation, lines, and blocking with the help of the volunteers. Then we wrapped up the day with a farewell and a good luck for the last day’s performance.

On the fifth and last day, everyone gathered in the courtyard to watch the performance of each group. The MCs presented an opening speech before each performance from Group 1 to Group 6. Each performance had its own individuality and uniqueness. Some did poetry, while others did mini drama. All to wrap up what the students have learned and to conclude the event, we had closing speeches from the head of the event, current president of HIMSI, and Pak Adi Ngudiharjo S. Pi as the headmaster of SMP Al-Hasanah, as well as gifting a plaque to the headmaster as a sign of gratitude for giving us the opportunity to hold this event at their school. We wrapped it up with one final photo with all the volunteers, committee, and students in the courtyard. HIMSI’s 2025 Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat event was concluded. We were successfully able to encourage the students to learn English through a movie, raise awareness about environmental issues, and build confidence to perform.
