PENGABDIAN PADA MASYARAKAT (PkM) TO YAYASAN YATIM PIATU RASULULLAH SAW

This month HIMSI is back with another event! PkM, more widely known as Pengabdian Pada Masyarakat, is an event where HIMSI makes a series of events that can give benefits or information to the society outside of the university. One of many events that are usually being held is a charity event and later the amount of money will be given to those in need, such as orphanages, hospitals, etc. The event’s purpose is to help society have a better day while also introducing the organization to society.

This year’s PkM was held offline and was coordinated by Nida Salsabila. The organizers from HIMSI and volunteers from English Literature went to the orphanage and helped the orphans there. The event was held for three days, which was on the 20th, 21st, and lastly the 23rd of July 2022, from 13:00 until 16:00, and was held in Yayasan Yatim Piatu Rasulullah SAW.  The event was held to teach English to the children in the orphanage in hopes that the younger generation will be more exposed and knowledgeable to the subject as an act of community service.

For the first day of PkM, there were volunteers from the English Literature major, Yolanda, Verlyn, and Hanzo. Those who taught the children were Yolanda, Verlyn, Hanzo, Raradewi, Aldrina, and Bernesa. The event started with an introduction session from PkM organizers, volunteers, and the children from the orphanage. After the introduction, there was a game session where the children and organizers played the Dragon Game, mostly known as Ular Naga. It was a very enthusiastic game since the children had a lot of fun playing the game with all the volunteers and PkM committees. The game was played by dividing into different teams. The team that won got 2 candies for each child, while the ones who lost got one candy only. After the game session, the event continued with a teaching session where volunteers and some PkM committees taught how to introduce themselves in English. The children had a lot of fun learning and trying it for the first time. They did not give up trying till the end!

On the second day of the event, there was some miscommunication with the Orphanage, as they forgot HIMSI will be coming again for another second day PkM. The issue was not too big, as they provided the third floor of the orphanage for the event.  For the second day, the volunteers were Elisa, Annisa, and Astrid. While those who gave English tutoring sessions were Elisa, Astrid, Annisa from the volunteers’ group, and Raradewi, Aldrina, and Bernesa from the PkM committees. The second day started with the usual introductions, then continued with the Musical Chair game session. There were 3 rounds of the game with 2 kids eliminating each round. The winners were two children who then received snacks and candies as the prize. On day 2, the children were taught how to identify “This” and “That”,” These” and ”Those”. Most of them understood, but some were still confused about how it is used in a sentence and they also has a hard time with the pronunciation. But they all tried their best to learn. Because the event on day 2 started earlier than scheduled, the sessions also ended earlier. The remaining free time was used for having fun and talking about experiences with the children of the orphanage.

The last day of PkM was on the 23rd of July 2022. With volunteers Nabillah, Zahra and Jessica. The last day of the event started with introductions again which then continued with the game session. On the third day, the game which was played is called Bisik Kuda. It is played by giving some words to the player sitting at the farthest corner of the line, and they have to deliver the words by whispering them to the next player’s ears. The words which would end up in the opposite corner would have to be the correct words. It was very fun and even funny since the children got a lot of words wrong. The event continued with the tutoring session. The third day was to learn about colors and animals in English. The children were very curious and had a lot of fun figuring out what the animals’ names were in English. Since it was the last day in the orphanage, there was a special session. It was crafting origami papers. The volunteers and committees taught the children how to craft and build a heart shape with origami. Then they wrote their hopes and wishes on the heart-shaped origami. After that, they lined up to stick the heart-shaped origami with their wishes on a board which was provided by the PkM committees and volunteers. Then there was a donation session, where committees submitted the donations from people who donated. The last day was a hard one since it was the day the volunteers and committees had to say their farewells to the children from the orphanage. Some children even asked when we were coming back to play.

This ends the long-awaited PkM event from HIMSI. Though there were some miscommunications and technical issues, the event still ended successfully. It was the first ever PkM from HIMSI which was held offline since the pandemic happened. Some went through a lot of hard times just to make this event fun and successful. Thank you to the volunteers and PkM committees who have helped realize this event and made it a reality. We hope that things which were taught to the children would be useful in their life later on.  That is all from HIMSI’s PkM event! Let us meet again next year with a lot more fun games, snacks, prizes, and tutoring!
