However, when individuals prioritize their own needs, desires, or well-being, these actions are sometimes perceived as selfish. This happens because putting oneself first is often associated with placing personal interests above others. In reality, caring for one’s own needs does not necessarily mean disregarding other people’s feelings or well-being. Understanding the difference between self-love and selfishness is therefore important to prevent self-love from being misunderstood.

Self-love can be understood as a positive attitude toward oneself that involves self-care, self-acceptance, and awareness of one’s needs. It is conceptually different from narcissism and can be viewed through three main aspects: self-contact, self-acceptance, and self-care. Self-contact involves being aware of one’s internal state and needs, self-acceptance means accepting both strengths and weaknesses, and self-care involves maintaining one’s well-being. Therefore, self-love is not simply about doing things that feel good. A person can recognize their weaknesses and work to improve themselves while being motivated by self-respect rather than self-hatred.

Self-love also extends beyond the individual. It can coexist with responsibility and concern for family, relationships, and society. Loving oneself does not mean considering oneself more important than everyone else. Instead, it involves developing a healthy relationship with oneself while still recognizing the needs and existence of others.

The main difference between self-love and selfishness lies in their intentions and effects. Self-love means meeting one’s needs while considering how one’s actions affect others. In contrast, selfishness involves prioritizing personal interests without adequately considering other people’s needs or feelings. For example, declining a friend’s invitation because one needs time to rest can be an act of self-love. However, constantly expecting others to follow one’s wishes while ignoring their feelings is more appropriately considered selfish behavior.

One way to practice self-love without becoming selfish is by establishing healthy personal boundaries. Boundaries help individuals communicate what they are comfortable with, what they are unwilling to accept, and how they expect to be treated. Saying “no,” asking for time to rest, or expressing discomfort with certain treatment does not mean that someone does not care about others. Instead, boundaries create a balance between caring for oneself and respecting others.

Several strategies can help individuals practice healthy self-love. First, developing self-awareness through self-contact allows individuals to recognize their emotional and physical needs before acting. Second, assertive communication and boundaries help people express their needs without guilt while maintaining empathy. Third, self-acceptance without defensiveness encourages people to acknowledge mistakes and limitations without blaming or manipulating others for validation. Finally, maintaining social responsibility reminds individuals that self-love should still involve respect for other people and accountability for their actions.

Ultimately, self-love is not a free pass to become toxic. Prioritizing oneself does not mean that everyone else has to come second or that their feelings no longer matter. Healthy self-love means recognizing that our needs and well-being are important while remaining mindful of how our actions affect others. By respecting ourselves and others at the same time, self-love can help us build healthier relationships rather than harm the people around us.

References

Chernata, T.
