Description of an IT Auditor
With the proliferation of technology, information technology, or IT, auditing is a solid field for those with a genuine interest and aptitude for computer networking. An IT auditor operates in a challenging environment. Success in the field requires teamwork and communication skills, as well as the acquisition of audit certifications to qualify for employment
Responsibilities
An IT auditor is responsible for the internal controls and risks of a company’s technology network. This role includes identifying the weaknesses in a systems network and creating an action plan to prevent security breeches in the technology. An IT auditor can also be involved in the planning and execution of internal audit procedures and the creation of internal audit reports. An auditor must work within a team to create a solid information technology infrastructure, and collaborate with clients to devise and put in place policies and procedures regarding network security issues.
Skills Required
IT auditors typically have a bachelor degree in information technology, information systems, accounting or business administration. An IT auditor should develop solid communication skills to not only understand technical jargon, but to translate technical jargon into business-related decisions for management and clients. Patience and an ability to teach is a plus, as much of information technology is learned on the job and requires imparting knowledge to others in the company work environment. IT auditors should also have a high absorption rate for understanding new technologies. Industry trends change quickly, which requires efforts by those in the field to keep up.
Certification
Depending on the employer and area of specialization, some type of certification can help individuals secure employment. Certified Information Systems Auditor, or CISA, is the widely recognized standard certification for IT auditors and includes information security, audit, control and assurance professionals. Certified Information Systems Security Professional, or CISSP, recognizes an individual’s information security knowledge. Other recognized certifications include Certified Information Security Manager and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
Work Environment
IT auditors may find work in financial institutions, auditing, accounting and information technology companies, or any company in any industry that utilizes a technological network. Most of the work is done on site in an office environment, although some travel to other locations may be part of the job. The role involves a team environment, working with management, various business units and clients to establish a smooth and secure network system. The field of auditing is expected to grow as fast as other careers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
