Before, people mostly went to physical stores, but now millions just use their phones to buy stuff. The Indonesian Internet Service Provider Association says over 70% of the country has the internet, which is more than 200 million people connected digitally. This really helps e-commerce grow and makes big online shopping events like 11.11 and 12.12 possible.

Every twin date (same month and date), Indonesian e-commerce platforms become online shopping hubs, with traffic soaring. Promo notifications flood phones, social media’s full of sweet deals, and influencers jump in to chat about flash sales and hand out special vouchers. This isn’t just a fleeting trend; events like 11.11 and especially 12.12 are marketing strategies designed to create a transaction surge in a short time.

Indonesians have already accepted this 12.12 event as part of Harbolnas (Hari Belanja Online Nasional). This event is regularly held at the end of each year, such as “Gajian Sale” and “Promo Guncang 12.12, ” which are held not only on Shopee or other online shops, but also on TikTok Shop. These platforms not only offer big discounts but also demonstrate their role in developing the digital economy and helping local brands penetrate regional markets through the “World Local” initiative. The event kicked off with a few strategies, the first one aiming to build up long-term momentum before the big summit day. This strategy helps consumers get excited early, and for companies, businesses, and platform owners, it means more daily app visits leading up to 12.12. For instance, Tokopedia started its “Road to 12.12” campaign in early December with deals like vouchers worth millions of rupiah, free shipping, flash sales for 12,000 rupiah on tons of products, and special promos for certain brands.

The second strategy is to offer big discounts to draw in customers. For example, during Harbolnas 12.12, e-commerce sites like Shopee, Tokopedia, Lazada, and Blibli gave discounts of up to 90%, and even had product promos for just Rp 1 to Rp 12. This super bold discount clearly worked wonders, grabbing the attention of millions of shoppers and boosting daily transactions way higher than usual.

The third strategy is all about boosting local brands and UMKM. Tokopedia and TikTok Shop are teaming up for Harbolnas, pushing local products onto digital platforms and even into ASEAN markets. The government and industry are stoked about it, saying it’s helping national e-commerce grow and giving small businesses a chance.

So, the fourth strategy is to mix live commerce with influencer marketing. This means e-commerce platforms will really get consumers involved through live broadcasts with products, demos, and interactive promos. This setup creates real-time interaction and a feeling of urgency, which will make people more likely to buy stuff on impulse during the event.

We’ve discussed urgency before, right? Now we’re diving into the final strategy: using consumer psychology like urgency and scarcity. Uses flash sales with limited time, “low stock” alerts, and countdown timers, that’s the whole package to make people feel that urgency, pushing them to buy faster without overthinking. This trick really boosts sales during big shopping events.

Events like 11.11 and 12.12 show that modern e-commerce marketing is more than just low prices. The secret to its success is using cross-channel campaigns, targeted promotions, data analytics, and working with platforms, influencers, and brands. This is a great example for showing how integrated marketing can keep people shopping online again and again.

Beyond promotions and user surges, Harbolnas also demonstrates a shift in the competitive structure of Indonesia’s digital industry. While e-commerce competition previously focused on price wars and shipping subsidies, companies now rely on integrated ecosystems. Platforms like Tokopedia, Shopee, and TikTok Shop offer not only products but also digital payment systems, logistics services, live streaming features, and integration with local MSMEs. This effective strategy keeps consumers engaged in a single app, from product search to payment. For businesses, this approach increases user retention and average transaction value.

There’s an interesting fact about changing shopping patterns. During 12.12, transactions often peak at exactly 12:00 a.m. when the promotion begins. Many consumers deliberately waituntil the next day to get the best prices or limited vouchers. This demonstrates the psychological effects of scarcity and urgency, as discussed previously. Data from various industry reports shows that categories like fashion, beauty, and electronics often contribute to high transaction volumes. However, in recent years, daily necessities and food have seen significant increases. This means that e-commerce is no longer just an additional shopping place, but has become the primary basis for household consumption.

This phenomenon also demonstrates the increasing digitalization of consumer behavior in Indonesia, as well as their growing responsiveness to structured promotions. When momentum is effectively generated for the appropriate target audience, millions of individuals are willing to engage in simultaneous transactions. From a business standpoint, this exemplifies how companies can effectively make various marketing elements into a cohesive and impactful movement or breakthrough.

So, why is this event synonymous only with 11.11 and 12.12? Not 1.1, 2.2, or even 3.3? This is because 11.11 has a global legacy from Singles’ Day, popularized by the Alibaba Group. Meanwhile, 12.12 coincides with the end-of-year shopping period and Harbolnas in Indonesia. This date is also synonymous with increased purchasing power due to bonuses and Christmas and New Year shopping. As a result, promotions on 11.11 and 12.12 are much more massive and discounts more aggressive. 11.11 and 12.12 become peak momentum, driving a significant surge in transactions and achieving annual targets.

Writer: Muhammad Rajendra Rasyad

The Indonesian shopping scene has totally changed in the last ten years.
