Lens distortion can either make or break our images, depending on the look and feel we are trying to achieve. Below, you’ll learn what distortion is, why it’s good or bad, and how to fix it if needed.

What is lens distortion?

Lens distortion is any deformation that occurs in the images produced by our camera lens. It’s when straight lines appear bent or curvy in photographs. Lens distortion isn’t necessarily bad, sometimes it is intended to create a certain look or feel on images. 

The two most common types of lens distortion are barrel distortion and pincushion distortion.

Most photo editing apps and softwares are able to fix lens distortion. It’s usually labelled under “lens distortion”, “lens correction”, “remove distortion”, or “transform”
