This group came from South Asia and migrated to the archipelago via the island of Sumatra. From the Malay peninsula, they crossed to the island of Sumatra and finally settled around Lake Toba, North Sumatra.<br \/>\nThe Batak tribe has eleven recorded sub-tribes. These sub-tribes include the Karo Batak, Toba Batak, Papa Batak, Simalungun Batak, Angkola Batak, Mandailing Batak, Dairi Batak, Nias Batak, Alas Batak, Gayo Batak, and Kluet Batak. The Batak people use the Batak language for daily communication. Each sub-ethnic has its own accent or dialect in pronouncing the Batak language. The Batak language is divided into two branches, namely the Angkola, Mandailingi, and Toba Bataks forming the southern family.
