Another top and favorite, popular modern dance is called the, ‘Hip-hop’. It is a fusion dance genre that includes popping, locking, breaking, jazz, ballet, tap dancing, and other styles. This term is also used as an exonym and umbrella term for many types of street dance styles. It includes a large ranger of styles that were made in the 1970s and became popular by dance crews in the United States. This popular dance, has also been included to have inspired the new popular dance ‘K-pop’.

The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop sometimes named as the “New style” and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called “Jazz-funk”. Usually, trained dancers would develop these studio styles of dancing to create choreographies from the hip-hop dances that were performed on streets. but due to the development, hip-hop dance became practiced in both outdoor settings and in studios. Then, commercialization started in the 1990s and 2000s with the help of most movies such as: The Grind, Planet B-BOy, RIze, StreetDance 3D, America’s Best Dance Crew, Saigon Electric, the Step Up film series, and The LXD, a web series. More styles were made during the time such as Memphis jookin, turfing, jerkin’, and krump.

The main thing that made hip-hop special from other dance genres was from its component styles is that in hip-hop dance, the dancing is usually very well choreographed and is often performed to be a part of an ensemble. Also, in contrast to its component styles such as the breaking or popping which are freestyle-oriented whether it’s performed solo or as a group. The introduction of the hip-hop dance and its component styles outside the United States have resulted in dance showcases, dance classes, and competitions that have aided in maintaining their presence and growth globally. These are examples of international hip-hop dance competitions: the UK B-Boy Championships, Juste Debout, and EuroBattle. Australia also hosts a team-based, competition called as the World Supremacy Battlegrounds and Japan also hosts a two-on-two competition called World Dance Colosseum.
